This landmark exhibition features masterworks from The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., tracing American art from the birth of the modern spirit to postwar painting through some of the finest examples of late 19th and 20th century art.

Celebrating the generous gift of Joan and John Richardson, this exhibition uses these works on paper in conjunction with artworks from the collection to reveal how their contribution enlarges and diversifies the Carter’s holdings in illuminating ways.

Nature/Culture explores different facets of the dichotomy between nature and culture through photographs, reflecting on how nature counterpoints and enlivens our built environment and on what qualifies as “natural.”

This special exhibition showcases one-of-a-kind works on paper never before exhibited together, chronicling the sweeping changes that occurred in American art over the course of nearly 200 years from portraiture and history painting to modernism and abstraction.

This exhibition of drawings spanning the 19th and 20th centuries represents the evolution of the medium from preliminary outlines for other artistic media to a modern means of self-expression in its own right.

During the renovation, this exhibition features highlights from the permanent collection, including paintings, photographs, and sculptures, by some of America’s most renowned artists.

While the museum is closed for expansion, visitors will still have the opportunity to experience American art through “Greatest Hits” from the museum’s collection at the Carter’s temporary gallery in downtown Fort Worth.
