Become a volunteer!
We want YOU to volunteer at the Carter!
We couldn’t do it without you! Every year, Carter volunteers contribute countless hours to help us bring the best of American art to visitors near and far. You can be a part of our amazing team! No art experience is necessary—just enthusiasm and a dedicated interest in the Museum and the communities we serve.
We are currently looking for volunteers to fill the following roles:
Exhibition Hosts
Exhibition Hosts at the Carter welcome visitors to our special exhibitions by introducing them to the gallery space, pointing out artwork highlights, and answering questions.
-
The Carter is excited to present American Modernism from the Charles Butt Collection. This exhibition features the private collection of businessman, philanthropist, and Texas native Charles Butt, which includes works by 20th century American modernist icons including Romare Bearden, Edward Hopper, Joan Mitchell, Alice Neel, Georgia O’Keeffe, Alma Thomas, and Andrew Wyeth. The Carter invites you to become a volunteer Exhibition Host!
Role of an Exhibition Host
Hosts will prepare a short introduction to share with visitors entering the exhibition, including an orientation to the space and artwork highlights. As a representative of the Carter, hosts will commit to the following (pending individual review session):
- At least five shifts in the galleries—each shift is 1.5 hours
- Shifts available Saturdays and Sundays, 1 to 2:30 p.m., from September 27, 2025, through January 25, 2026
- Background check prior to first shift
- Wearing a Carter t-shirt during your shift (provided to you!)
Exhibition Host Training
Exhibition Hosts will receive behind-the-scenes training with Carter curators and educators. No prior museum experience is needed! Everything you need will be provided during the following trainings:
- Review of materials provided by the Carter on your own time—estimated 1 to 2 hours
- In-person training at the Carter led by staff—1.5 hours
- Visitor engagement training over Zoom—1 hour
- Review session (in-person or virtual) to be scheduled at your convenience before your first shift—1.5 hours
If you are interested in participating in this project, please fill out an application before August 22. Please email or call 817.989.5038 with questions.
