We couldn’t do it without you! Every year, Carter volunteers contribute countless hours to help us bring the best of American art to visitors near and far. You can be a part of our amazing team! No art experience is necessary—just enthusiasm and a dedicated interest in the Museum and the communities we serve.

Gallery Hosts: Legacy Galleries

Gallery Hosts at the Carter welcome visitors to a specific gallery or collection area, share information about the major themes and ideas of that gallery, offer spotlight talks on artwork highlights, and are available for casual conversation and questions. We are now accepting applications for the module, Legacy Galleries: Russell and Remington through January 8, 2027.

  • Interested in leading tours at the Carter? The first step is to become a Gallery Host! Gallery Hosts who successfully complete all four training modules can choose to continue training to become Gallery Guides. Modules include Legacy Galleries: Russell and Remington, American Roots and the Gilded Age, Landscapes, and Modern America. Please note that we will release details on all modules soon.

    Role of a Gallery Host

    Gallery Hosts will prepare a short introduction to share with visitors entering the gallery, overviewing the gallery’s major themes, ideas, artists, etc. Each Gallery Host will also be prepared to lead three approximately 8-minute spotlight talks, which involves prompting discussion and sharing related contextual information. As a representative of the Carter, hosts will commit to the following (pending individual review session):

    • At least eight (8) shifts within the calendar year—each shift is 1.5 hours
    • Shifts available Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Sundays, 1 to 2:30 p.m.
    • Background check prior to first shift
    • Wearing a Carter t-shirt during your shift (provided to you!)

    Gallery Host Training

    Gallery Hosts receive behind-the-scenes training with Carter curators and educators. No museum experience is required. Training includes virtual and in-person sessions, plus independent review of digital resources. Attendance at every training session is required. However Gallery Hosts may miss one session with advance notice and must coordinate with staff to make it up.

    • Review of digital resources provided by the Carter on your own time—estimated 3 to 4 hours
    • Thursday, January 21, 5:30 p.m., virtual training session on Teams —1 hour
    • Thursday, January 28, 5:30 p.m., in-person training session at the Carter—1.5 hours
    • Thursday, February 4, 5:30 p.m., virtual training session on Teams —1 hour
    • Thursday, February 18, 5:30 p.m., in-person training session at the Carter—1.5 hours
    • Practice session (in-person or virtual) to be scheduled at your convenience before your first shift

Exhibition Hosts at the Carter welcome visitors to our special exhibitions by introducing them to the gallery space, pointing out artwork highlights, and answering questions. We are not accepting applications for Exhibition Hosts at this time. Check back soon!

Carter College Council
