  • The Carter is excited to present Black Photojournalism, an exhibition of over 250 photographs that explores the groundbreaking work of more than 60 photographers between 1945 and the mid-1980s. The exhibition highlights the essential role of Black photojournalists in documenting both important historical events as well as the richness of everyday life. The Carter invites you to become a volunteer Exhibition Host!

    Role of an Exhibition Host

Hosts will prepare a short introduction to share with visitors entering the exhibition, including an orientation to the space and artwork highlights. As a representative of the Carter, hosts will commit to the following (pending individual review session):

    • At least five shifts in the galleries—each shift is 1.5 hours
    • Shifts available Saturdays, and Sundays, from March 21 through July 5, 2026
    • Background check prior to first shift
    • Wearing a Carter t-shirt during your shift (provided to you!)

    Exhibition Host Training

Exhibition Hosts will receive behind-the-scenes training with Carter curators and educators. No prior museum experience is needed! Everything you need will be provided during the following trainings:

    • Review of materials provided by the Carter on your own time—estimated 1-2 hours
    • In-person training at the Carter led by staff—1.5 hours—on Saturday, March 7 at 10:30 a.m.
    • Virtual visitor engagement training over Teams (please attend one of the following)—1 hour
      • Tuesday, March 10 at noon
      • OR Thursday, March 12 at 5:30 p.m.
    • Review session (in-person or virtual) to be scheduled at your convenience before your first shift

If you are interested in participating in this project, please fill out an application form before February 23. If you have questions, email or call 817.989.5038.
