Object Description
Although Ryan took up collage late in her career, she was enormously prolific in the medium, producing roughly 400 such pieces between 1948 and 1954. In these works, she paid special attention to the tactile properties of fabric and paper, creating abstract, geometric compositions that play off the woven structures of these materials.
In Number 529, Ryan included gold foil, handmade papers, and textiles in a balanced arrangement of textured forms, juxtaposing the flattened wrinkles of fabric at the top left against the splayed, frayed edges of the swatch at center. Along the bottom edge, small triangles are torn out and peeled back from the paper, creating a line of irregular diamond shapes that offers a direct trace of the artist’s hand as she manipulated and arranged her materials.
