Museum-wide

Founded in 1875 as a more affordable, inclusive, and experimental alternative to the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League of New York has instructed some of the country’s most influential artists. The League quickly became an important hub for creative innovation, cultivating artists such as Berenice Abbott, Peggy Bacon, Stuart Davis, John Sloan, and Joseph Stella. In 2025, the League celebrates 150 years as an independent art school in Manhattan. In this latest rotation of Re/Framed, explore art by and about artists in our collection who studied at the League.

Re/Framed gives visitors to the Carter a new way to look at the Museum’s collection. Several times a year, artwork is rotated throughout the galleries allowing visitors to see the works through a different lens. Works that are part of Re/Framed can be identified by the window icon on their labels.

Re/Framed is organized as part of Salute to the League, a national program honoring the history and artistic contributions of the Art Students League of New York.
