re/framed

In art, color is often more than just pigment. It can also be a conduit for conveying the emotion and psychology of a subject. Blue—a hue associated with natural elements like water or sky, and with feelings like melancholy or tranquility—carries rich associations and resonances. From the inky blues of a nocturne scene to the distinctive Prussian blue of a cyanotype photograph, the works brought together in Re/Framed explore the expressive power and technical significance of blue across different art practices.
See works by Ruth Asawa, Larry McNeil, Eleanore Mikus, Georgia O’Keeffe, Eliot Porter, and more that share the theme of blue.
Re/Framed gives visitors to the Carter a new way to look at the Museum’s collection. Several times a year, artwork is rotated throughout the galleries allowing visitors to see the works through a different lens. Works that are part of Re/Framed can be identified by the window icon on their labels.
