Sarah Sense’s production combines photography and weaving. In bringing together these two artistic media, she decolonizes lens-based imagery and representational genres linked to colonial endeavors such as maps. Sense was born and raised in California, where she attended California State University, Chico, prior to completing her MFA at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Sense’s weaved photographs often depict historical cartographic motifs and landscapes, popular culture, and archival materials representing Indigenous peoples. Sense has also developed curatorial projects and taught at different institutions, including the Institute of American Indian Arts and New York University.
