We’ve gone plaid! Visit sensory stations in the galleries, create your own bold artwork, and play with special guests from the community as we learn about pattern, shape, color, and symbolism in art.

Sensory Explorations is a free event for families with children of all ages who are on the autism spectrum. Families can connect with artworks in the galleries, play and learn with special guests, and get creative with hands-on art-making experiences. While the needs of individuals with autism are the focus of this event, it is also intended to be fun for parents, siblings (of all ages), and other friends and relatives!

Activities

• Play with Carter Community Artist Dizzy Orbit and her bold, patterned soft sculptures in a calm, low-light space.
• Create colorful mixed media Prism Pattern Collages inspired by Gabriel Dawe’s sculpture, Plexus no. 34.
• Play with spirals and looping wire with a stay-and-play sensory station inspired by Ruth Asawa.
• Explore the power of stripes with a tactile sensory station in The Statue of Liberty from Bartholdi to Warhol.
• Learn about the symbolism of Colonial American gravestones while you touch, sort, and stack stones in Here Lyeth: Grave Rubbings by Ann Parker and Avon Neal.
• Explore the galleries as a family and dip into the Chill Zone to relax as needed.
