Second Thursdays at the Carter: Cameras & Community

"Second Thursdays"

Event Details

Event Date

  • Thursday, June 11, 5–8 p.m.

Event Description

No talking. No food and drinks. No photos.

Come break the rules and say “yes!” to new art experiences at the Carter’s Second Thursdays! Each month you’ll find something different than the last—mingle with fellow art lovers, make art, and meet visiting artists, sometimes with live music and always with themed cocktails inspired by the Carter’s collection.

In June, examine the untold history of Black-owned media and Black photojournalists who were working in the 1940s to the 1980s in Black Photojournalism.

Schedule

5–8 p.m.

Explore archival copies of LIFE magazine in the Library.

Check out the Black Photojournalism exhibition and hear insights from exhibition hosts.

Create your own poetry using pages from newspapers and magazines inspired by the themes of storytelling, media, and memory.

Enjoy live jazz music in the Atrium.

Explore a one-night-only display of photographs by Calvin Littlejohn documenting the 1959 funeral of John Thomas at Broadway Baptist Church. Although Thomas, the church's longtime janitor, was barred from worshipping alongside White congregants during segregation, his funeral became the first integrated event in the church's history. On loan from Mr. Thomas's family and Broadway Baptist Church, these powerful photographs offer a moving glimpse into a pivotal moment in Fort Worth history.

Visit our typewriter poet in Black Photojournalism and take home a custom poem inspired by a word, memory, or story of your choosing.

Join Carter Community Artist LaShonda Cooks to create a miniature photo diorama inspired by the stories and images featured throughout Black Photojournalism. Guests will choose from a selection of historic photographs by Black photographers, then build their own tiny scene inside a keepsake tin using textured papers, acrylic markers, and a little glitter for extra flair. Supplies are limited to the first 200 people.

Enjoy drinks, cocktails, and mocktails. Carter members get one complimentary drink!

5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Meet Ron Abram, grandson of photographer Calvin Littlejohn, for an evening of conversation about Fort Worth history, Black community newspapers, and the importance of preserving local stories. Abram will share memories of his grandfather’s life and work, including how Black photographers and journalists documented moments that were often overlooked or excluded from mainstream coverage.

5:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.

Experience a moving, wordless performance by Jubilee Theater inspired by the work of Black photojournalists. Through movement and pantomime, performers embody moments of memory, resilience, community, and the powerful act of witnessing history. Inspired by the photographers and stories featured in the exhibition, these living tableaux explore what it means to document a community and preserve moments that might otherwise be forgotten.

6–7 p.m.

Join Curator of Photographs Charles Wylie in conversation with Kwame Samori Brathwaite for a special talk in support of the exhibition Black Photojournalism. Together, they will explore the work and lasting influence of Brathwaite’s father, Kwame Brathwaite, the acclaimed photographer and originator of the “Black Is Beautiful” movement. Seating for the talk is first come, first served.

American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation may be provided during this event upon advance request. Please send us an email for more information.
