Event Description

Photo Forum members are invited to attend a talk with Sarah Meister, Executive Director of Aperture; Kristen Gaylord, Associate Curator of Photographs; and John Rohrbach, Senior Curator of Photographs. Meister will share reflections from her first year heading Aperture and speak about the heralded photography arts organization’s role with respect to museums, collectors, and the field at large.

Prior to becoming Executive Director at Aperture, Meister had a 25-year tenure in the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. At MoMA, she curated numerous acclaimed exhibitions including most recently Fotoclubismo: Brazilian Modernist Photography, 1946–1964 (2021) and Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures (2020). In addition to catalogues for these exhibitions, her recent publications consider the work of Luigi Ghirri (2020), Gordon Parks (2020), Frances Benjamin Johnston (2019), Dorothea Lange (2018), and the 1967 MoMA exhibition New Documents (2017).
