Photographer Nell Dorr was best known for her portraits and photos of mothers and children. The Nell Dorr Papers at the Carter cover 1934 to 1988 but are primarily from the 1940s through the 1960s. The collection consists of:

  • Correspondence: both personal and business, including with Dorr’s second husband, John Van Nostrand Dorr, and photographers Clarence White and Edward Steichen
  • Writings by Nell Dorr: including her autobiography and poems
  • Ephemera: including reviews of her art, tax returns, and clippings about Dorr and her friends Lillian Gish, Tasha Tudor, and John Howard Griffin
  • Photographs: primarily associated with the correspondence
  • Published materials: Dorr’s publications and publications about her and her photography, including her books Mother and Child, Bare Feet, and In a Blue Moon
