In the early 20th century, artist Wanda Gág (pronounced GOG) began to make a name for herself producing book illustrations and exhibiting her lithographic prints. Her early work as a graphic artist led to a long-standing commitment to authoring and illustrating children’s books. Gág’s first book, Millions of Cats, won the Newbury Honor and is the oldest American picture book still in print.

Wanda Gág: Printmaker and Illustrator, drawn from the Carter’s Library and art collections, connects these diverse strands of her career to present a snapshot of her accomplishments. Included in the exhibition are prints, magazines, books, and even a calendar, all featuring Gág’s work.
