Event Description

Celebrate the opening of The Statue of Liberty from Bartholdi to Warhol with a day of conversations, performances, art, and community. Inspired by the exhibition, Liberty Talks brings together curators, historians, artists, performers, and community partners for a day of experiences that explore liberty through art, history, music, poetry, and popular culture.

Enjoy curator talks, live performances, custom poetry, hands-on activities, complimentary coffee from Maya’s Macchiatos, and a special exhibition tour that unfolds through music and theater. Hungry? Grab lunch from Smoke N' Slice, our on-site food truck serving food and beverages for purchase throughout the day. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a longtime museum lover, there's something waiting for you throughout the Museum!

Curator Conversation: From Bartholdi to Warhol Join Juliette Chevée, Director and Curator of the Musée Bartholdi in Colmar, France, and Andrew Eschelbacher, co-curator of the exhibition, for a conversation on the making of The Statue of Liberty from Bartholdi to Warhol.

Faces of Liberty Project Stop by Stories Under a Tent to participate in the Faces of Liberty Project! Have a photographic portrait taken and share what liberty means to you.

11 a.m.–3 p.m. | Library

Coffee & Conversation Enjoy a complimentary coffee from Maya’s Macchiatos and get up close and personal with one of our 3D-printed Statues of Liberty.

Library access is reserved for guests who have preregistered for one or more Liberty Talks lectures. We appreciate your understanding.

Noon–3 p.m. | Library & Special Exhibition, Second Floor

Typewriter Poet A few simple questions become a one-of-a-kind poem, created just for you on a vintage typewriter. Find our Typewriter Poet in the Library from noon to 2 p.m. and in the Special Exhibition from 2:15 to 3 p.m. and leave with a personalized keepsake inspired by the spirit of liberty.

12:15–1:15 p.m. | Meet in the Atrium

Curator Tour with Live Performances Experience a one-of-a-kind curator-led tour with Andrew Eschelbacher, opening with a dramatic reading of “The New Colossus.” The tour continues through the galleries to a live soundtrack that shifts from classical violin to jazz bass before culminating in a powerful gospel finale that brings the exhibition’s story to life.

2–3 p.m. | Auditorium

Liberty Beyond the Pedestal Join collector and City Reliquary founder Dave Herman and tattoo artist and historian Michelle Myles for a conversation on liberty beyond the pedestal. From everyday ephemera to the bold lines of American Traditional tattooing, they’ll explore how the Statue of Liberty has been depicted on postcards, souvenirs, and even skin.
