For a More Livable Planet:
The Astronomy Library of Eliot Porter

Drawn from the Carter’s Library and photography collections, For a More Livable Planet: The Astronomy Library of Eliot Porter highlights the pioneering photographer's unrecognized interest in astronomy and the Moon. Bringing together illustrated books from Porter’s personal library, the photographer’s longstanding interest in scientific advances in astronomy and photography is put in full view. These books are complemented by three photographs, including one on view for the first time, prominently featuring the Moon as a central subject created throughout Porter's career. Together, his books and photographs speak to a great impulse in humanity to look upward toward space to gain greater insight into the unique nature of life on Earth.
