Ernest de Soto, Master Printer highlights the legacy of Ernest de Soto, the first Latino master printer in the United States. Featuring 28 lithographs, this exhibition marks the Museum’s first presentation of de Soto’s work and celebrates the collaborative art of lithography. Ernest de Soto, Master Printer features work by nine major artists de Soto collaborated with during his time at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop (now Tamarind Institute) in the 1960s, including Ruth Asawa, Herbert Bayer, José Luis Cuevas, Gego, Robert Hansen, Allen Jones, Matsumi Kanemitsu, George Earl Ortman, and George Sugarman.

This exhibition is drawn exclusively from the Carter’s collection. Carter founder, Ruth Carter Stevenson, acquired a copy of nearly every Tamarind print made from 1963 to 1970, amassing an impressive group of 2,300 lithographs. All 28 lithographs on view in the exhibition come from the Museum’s Tamarind holdings, underscoring the Carter’s long-term commitment to documenting and preserving this pivotal chapter in print history.
