Come break the rules and say “yes!” to new art experiences at the Carter’s Second Thursdays! Each month you’ll find something different than the last—mingle with fellow art lovers, make art, and meet visiting artists, sometimes with live music and always with themed cocktails inspired by the Carter’s collection.

In October, get ready for some spine-tingling fun with ghost stories, haunting images, and scarily delicious cocktails. Dive into the haunting history behind the special exhibition Here Lyeth: Grave Rubbings by Ann Parker and Avon Neal, browse eerie objects from the Research Library and Archives, create creepy keepsakes with a Carter Community Artist, and have your future revealed with palm readings. It's the perfect mix of art, mystery, and Halloween fun.

Groove to a spooky soundtrack
DJ Wild in the Streets is taking over the Atrium with a spooky set of haunting hits and otherworldly beats. Grab a cocktail or mocktail from the bar while you groove, or pick up light bites from the food cart. Drinks and food are available for purchase, and Carter members get their first drink free!

Library, First Floor

Palm reading is in your future
What does your future hold? Head to the Library for a palm reading with Sunny and see what might be written in your hands. Palm reading spots are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Explore eerie objects from our Research Library and Archives
Take a closer look at objects connected to death, mourning, and remembrance, including life masks by Scott and Stuart Gentling and Victorian “Sleeping Beauty” photography. Please note: This display includes historical photographs depicting deceased individuals.

Who were the people memorialized in Here Lyeth? Join Hannah Rainey, a Gallery Teacher at the Carter, to uncover the real stories behind the headstones on view.

Lounge, Second Floor

Create art inspired by Here Lyeth
Join Carter Community Artist Brenda Melgoza Ciardiello to make your own tombstone rubbing, then add commemorative words, symbols, and drawings inspired by the Colonial-era headstones in Here Lyeth.
