Event Description
No talking. No food and drinks. No peeking.
Come break the rules and say “yes!” to new art experiences at the Carter’s Second Thursdays! Each month you’ll find something different than the last—mingle with fellow art lovers, make art, and meet visiting artists, sometimes with live music and always with themed cocktails inspired by the Carter’s collection.
In August, go behind-the-scenes and hear tales from Carter staff about the work that makes a museum run.
Schedule
5–7 p.m.
Drop in and chat with various Carter staff about secrets and stories related to their job, the Carter’s collection, and special exhibitions. Explore the tools used to protect the art from the elements, discuss how conservators clean and treat artworks, learn about poison books, the weirdest items in Mark Dion’s The Texas Cabinet, check out our 3D printed sculptures, and more!
5–8 p.m.
Listen to DJ Wild in the Streets spin tunes and enjoy drinks for purchase, including a specialty watermelon cucumber cooler cocktail. Carter members get one complimentary drink! Lite bites are available for purchase at the Carter’s Food Cart.
Watch artist Charles Gray sketch artworks in the Carter’s collection. Feel free to hang out and draw with him!
Stop by the Art Cart for a hands-on activity designed to help you get to know secrets about one of our most popular artworks, Gabriel Dawe’s Plexus No. 34.
Pick up a Carter-themed crossword puzzle and search for the answers throughout the galleries.
View videos of how we installed a variety of intricate, large, and complicated artworks over the years.
Go on a behind-the-scenes tour of our Library and Archives and learn how you can spend more time up close and personal with our collection.
Sculpt part of an artwork using clay and leave clues for others to figure out the artwork that inspired you with Carter Community Artist Dizzy Orbit. Supplies limited to the first 200 people.
American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation may be provided during this event upon advance request. Please send us an email for more information.
