Event Description
No talking. No food and drinks. No photos
Come break the rules and say “yes!” to new art experiences at the Carter’s Second Thursdays! Each month you’ll find something different than the last—mingle with fellow art lovers, make art, and meet visiting artists, sometimes with live music and always with themed cocktails inspired by the Carter’s collection.
In June, celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Carter-commissioned In the American West series by Richard Avedon during a night themed around the exhibition Richard Avedon at the Carter.
Schedule
5–5:45 p.m.
Join photographer Ted Forbes for a tour of select works in Richard Avedon at the Carter. Forbes is the author of Visually Speaking and the creator of the YouTube channel The Art of Photography.
5–6:30 p.m.
Listen to a happy-hour live performance by musician Jakob Robertson. Robertson is an Americana/Folk singer-songwriter from Fort Worth.
5–8 p.m.
Enjoy drinks for purchase, including a specialty prickly pear margarita. Carter members get one complimentary drink! Lite bites are available for purchase at the Carter’s Food Cart.
Check out the Art Cart for a hands-on activity designed to help you get to know Richard Avedon and his process.
Chat with a Carter Exhibition Host who can share an introduction, offer artwork insight, answer questions, and help you navigate your way through Avedon’s photography process.
Create a personalized black-and-white postcard inspired by Richard Avedon's iconic portrait style with Carter Community Artist Javier Sandoval. Supplies limited to the first 200 people.
6–7:30 p.m.
Photographer Laura Wilson will talk with the Carter’s Executive Director, Andrew J. Walker, about her experience documenting Avedon’s travels and his creative process during the production of the photographs that would become In the American West. Following their conversation, both speakers will participate in a Q&A. Seating for the talk will be first come, first served.
6–8 p.m.
Drop by to practice your photography skills with Ted Forbes and a live model. This informal shoot will focus on portraits and the human figure. Bring your own handheld camera, but please no tripods, monopods, Gimbals, or other camera extensions such as selfie sticks.
7:30–8 p.m.
Laura Wilson will sign copies of her book Avedon at Work: In the American West.
American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation may be provided during this event upon advance request. Please send us an email for more information.
