Event Description
Photo Forum members are invited to an evening with photography scholar Beth Gates Warren who will talk on art dealer Julien Levy.
A noted photography scholar, Gates Warren will present a fascinating lecture on Julien Levy (1906–1981), one of the earliest art dealers to promote photography as a fine art form and also credited with bringing Surrealism to the United States. His eponymous New York City gallery (1931–49) was regarded as the best place to view photographs by Berenice Abbott, Eugene Atget, Man Ray, and George Platt Lynes, as well as the work of cutting-edge painters such as Dalí, Kahlo, Ernst, Giacometti, and Gorky. Gates Warren will base her talk on her recently published monumental four-volume set of books on Levy, which presents an uncensored insider’s view of Levy the person, the artists whose work he exhibited, and the influence he wielded during the 1930s and '40s.
