Event Description

Linking Rubbings of Colonial Gravestones to 21st Century Texas Cemetery Preservation

The Carter’s collection of colonial gravestone rubbings, made by Ann Parker and Avon Neal in the 1960s, represents an important phase in the development of cemetery and gravestone studies. Since the early 2000s, Texas has emerged as a national leader in cemetery preservation. Dr. Perky Beisel, Professor of History at Stephen F. Austin State University, will introduce the history of cemetery and gravestone studies while highlighting the important role of gravestone documentation, as pioneered by researchers like Parker and Neal.
