Event Description

Carter members and their guests have the first chance to visit Emancipation: The Unfinished Project of Liberation. The exhibition asks seven contemporary Black artists to respond to John Quincy Adams Ward’s bronze sculpture The Freedman (1863) and other Civil War-era works. See how history and the art of the past becomes inspiration for these artists as they consider the legacy of the Emancipation Proclamation on its 160th anniversary.
