Event Description

Join us as we read Mary Gabriel’s Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art (2018). Set amid a turbulent social and political period, Ninth Street Women tells the story of five women who dared to enter the male-dominated world of twentieth-century abstract painting—not as muses but as artists. Several of the women referenced in this book are included in the exhibition Set in Motion: Camille Utterback and Art That Moves. Curator Kristen Gaylord will begin the evening with a tour of the exhibition focused on some of the works by these incredible women. After the tour, enjoy a drink and discuss these gutsy artists.
