It is considered \ an appelation of bravery. \ Pa-da-ni A-pa-pi was head Chief of the \ Yankton (one of the largest divisions of the \ Dakota). At the time of the Sioiux outbreak in \ Minnesota, (1862) the Yankton numbered about \ 3000 souls, and had they joined the Minnesota \ Indians, all the White Settlements in Dakota, \ must have been wiped out, but Pa-da-ni A-pa-pi \ warned the White settlers to take refuge in the \ forts, promising to keep his people from the \ war-path is possible.
