u.l. to l.l. printed: Hamlin Garland thus describes a storm in the \ Canyon. "The whole vast chasm was roofed with \ masses of grey clouds ranked closely and burrying \ swiftly, all the distracting lines of the Canyon were \ lost and the haphazard coloring was made harmon- \ ious by deep blue curtains of mist. Here was a \ new phase of the Canyon. I began to understand \ it had a thousand differing words. It is like a \ mountain range, a cloud today, a wall of marble \ tomorrow. When the light falls into it is harsh, \ but the storm will transform it into a splendor no \ mountain range can surpass. Peaks will shift and \ glow, walls darken, crags take fire, and gray-green \ mesas take on the gleam of opalescent lakes of \ mountian water."
