    u.l. to l.r.: The Sky City - Acoma \\ Acoma is probably the most startlingly \ picturesque pueblo of New Mexico. It \ was first seen by Coronado in 1540, \ but over fifty years past before it could \ be conquered by the Spaniards. Although \ the danger of enemy attacks is long past, \ the Acomas still cling to their lofty \ home in spite of the fact that the men \ have to come down and travel for miles \ over the desert in order to work their \ fields and pasture their animals, and \ during the dry months the women have to \ carry xxxxxxxxxxxxx all their water from \ a spring below. \\ (The pueblo houses, built of stone slabs \ are seen on top of the mesa, in the \ center of the photograph.)
