Sheet Recto:
c.r. in ink: New York, when I was growing up, \ was the center of my universe. \ It is hard to break that \ association, even now that \ I have moved further and \ further away from it. Closer and \ closer to the land. \ I remember the bakeries, Yankee \ Stadium and The Polo Grounds, \ the butcher shops with \ sawdust on the floor. \ The butcher wore a straw hat \ and a great, blood smeared \ apron. He put his long, sharp \ knife on the side of beef
and \ you told him how wide to \ cut it. Nothing anywhere \ seemed more real.
