u.l. to c.l. printed: LA FONDA HOTEL, AT THE END OF \ THE SANTA FE TRAIL, SANTA FE, \ NEW MEXICO \ "La Fonda" (Spanish for "The Inn") \ was the name applied to the ancient adobe \ hostelry which stood at this corner, and \ where arrivals in early day found welcome \ and comfort after the arduous and danger- \ ous journey over the Indian and bandit-in- \ fested Santa Fe Trail. "The Inn" declined \ in the character of its patronage, was finally \ given over to other purposes, and much of \ it burned, after the coming of the railroad. \ In 1920-1, the people of Santa Fe by public \ subscription raised almost a quarter of a \ million dollars, with which the present mag- \ nificent edifice was erected. Its exterior is \ a perpetuation in steel and concrete of the \ ancient Santa Fe architecture, while the in- \ terior decorated along Indian and Spanish \ lines is a thoroughly modern and comfort- \ able hotel.
