Description
Typed letter signed. Reports on the racial divide he finds in Philadelphia. Says the schools there are closed due to a strike there and in York due to a shooting. He says the educators there are confused and unclear so the students are as well. Tells Dorr they expect him to perform miracles. In the interest of fairness to “both sides”, the school is having Birch speakers on campus for two days. [“Birch speakers” refers to members of the John Birch Society which is a conservative political advocacy group which opposed much of the Civil Rights movement on state’s rights grounds and asserted that Communists were involved in it.] He said he needed to refute their arguments in advance. Griffin said he was brought to calm the situation and avoid incidents and the shooting happened as soon as he arrived.
