u.l. to c.: The Enchanted Mesa \\ A famous rock in the New Mexican desert only \ a few miles away from Acoma, the Sky City \ perched on top of another rock almost as high and inaccessible is this one. The Acoma \ indians [sic] relate that many ceturies [sic] ago their \ ancestors lived in a pueblo on top of the \ Enchanted Mesa. The pueblo could be reached \ only by wooden step ladders. One day, when \ most of the inhabitants of the mesa were down \ in the plain working on their fields, a \ storm broke the ladders and those on top \ perished of hunger and thurst [sic]. The Acoma \ Indians them [sic] abandoned the mesa and built \ their pueblo on top of another rock, where \ it still stands.
