u.l. printed: A Distant View of Cliff Palace. -- This ruin, the \ largest and the first discovered on the Mesa Verde, \ was found by two cowboys, Richard and Alfred \ Wetherill, in 1888. Adjacent to the Mesa, along \ the Mancos River, many small dwellings were \ discovered in 1874 by W.H. Jackson, in charge \ of a Government party. The situation of Cliff \ Palace if typical, the prehistoric inhabitants having \ selected these caverns, formed by erosion in the \ sides of the canons, for greater safety from their \ enemies.
