u.l. to l.l.: A corner of one of the large Comunity \ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx \\ Houses of Taos \\ Taos situated 90 miles north of Santa-Fe \ and is one of the oldest inhabited pueblos \ of New Mexico. It is built in five receding \ terraces, connected with step ladders. In \ former days, when the Indians had to defend \ themselves from the attacks of nomads, the \ lower story of the two large community houses \ was not inhabited, but served as a storefront. \ The Taos Indians spend much xxx time \ on the roof of their pueblo. The figure in \ black are women wearing black shawls. The \ men wear white blankets thrown over their head \ or wrapped around their waist. The Taos \ Indians are very proud and independent people, \ who do not like to be looked at or photographed \ This photograph was made xxxxxx after \ the Indians had come to the conclusion that \ we were through making photographs.
