    u.l. printed: By Appointment \ ONE MILE UNDERGROUND. When entrance to \ a coal mine is made from the side of a hill or mountain, the \ tunnel may be a very long one, sometimes as much as a mile, \ but entrance to many mines is by a shaft sunk into the earth. \ The mining extends from the workings of outcrops, to a depth \ of 1600 feet, but most of the coal os obtained less than 1000 feet \ below the surface.
