The lat- \ ter is on the Pajarito Plateau west of the Rio \ Grande River and northwest of Santa Fe, New \ Mexico. The only approach to the ruins by mot- \ or is through a country of exceptional scenic and \ human interest. Quaint Spanish-American set- \ tlements and inhabited Indian pueblo of San \ Ildefonso are passed before the beautiful Pajarito \ canyon country is entered.
