The work of photographer and filmmaker Victor Masayesva Jr. explores the cultural heritage, storytelling, and lived experience of the Hopi Nation. Masayesva grew up in Hopiland, a sovereign Indigenous community that, after tolerating thousands of visitors who documented their religious practices without consent, banned outsider photography in the early 1900s. In this context, Masayesva’s work demonstrates that images produced with a camera are not always exploitative and can reflect a Hopi perspective. The artist attended Princeton University as an undergraduate student and the University of Arizona, Tucson, for his graduate studies. Masayesva’s work has been supported by the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Arizona Commission on the Arts.
