Mary Ellen Mark’s career in photojournalism took her to countries such as Turkey, Mexico, and India as well as to urban and rural locations throughout the United States. Her work, best known for its humanistic and documentary qualities, features a wide range of subjects: from missionary work and scenes of economic disenfranchisement to political demonstrations and portraits of circus performers and Hollywood stars. Mark's photographs most prominently circulated in LIFE magazine and in photobooks devoted to her work including Passport (1974) and Streetwise (1988). In 2014, the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, awarded Mark the Lifetime Achievement in Photography Award.
