If you’ve visited the Carter recently, you probably walked through our “sloping gallery” featuring El Límite, the large-scale photographs and wall murals by Celia Álvarez Muñoz. Now step into the Library to see Muñoz’s work on a smaller scale and in a different medium: the artist book. In 1980, Muñoz founded Enlightenment Press to produce intimate and conceptual works of art that incorporate her unique mode of storytelling in both English and Spanish.

Her two artist’s books on view include “Chispas Quémenme!” (“Sparks, Burn Me!”) Enlightenment Press #1 and "El Espíritu Malo" ("The Evil Spirit") Enlightenment Press #6. Both are prime examples of how Muñoz both accepted and challenged the standards and limitations of the book format.
