Event Description

Carter Photo Forum members are invited to meet a new generation of curators and conservators in photography. Join us in welcoming the new Assistant Curator of Photographs, María Beatriz H. Carrión, and Associate Conservator, Craig Kamrath.

Carrión, a PhD candidate in the History of Art at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, previously held curatorial positions at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam; the Morgan Library & Museum, New York; the New Orleans Museum of Art; and the Saint Augustine Cloisters in Quito, Ecuador. Her past research centers on active American and European women photographers during World War II, the history of photography in Latin America, as well as contemporary Indigenous and Latino photography.

Kamrath, who joined the Carter in 2023 following roles at the Museum of Modern Art and the Brooklyn Museum, will share a behind-the-scenes look at Karl Struss’s Century No. 2 5-by-7-inch view camera. The approximately 120-year-old large-format camera suffered age-related leather deterioration and other physical damage, requiring laborious treatment to stabilize it and prepare it for the exhibition, Moving Pictures: Karl Struss and the Rise of Hollywood.

Free for Photo Forum members. RSVP by email or call 817.989.5060 by August 11. Not a member of the Photo Forum? Join today!
