Event Description

Join us at the Carter for a hauntingly good time exploring the art of grave rubbing, then experiment with texture and watercolor to create a work of your own.

From 1 to 1:45 p.m., exhibition curator Michaela Haffner will lead a tour of Here Lyeth: Grave Rubbings by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. The exhibition features grave rubbings created by Parker and Neal using paper and wax crayons to capture the carved imagery and textures of historic New England gravestones.

After the tour, head to The Lounge for an art-making activity inspired by the artists’ rubbing process. Arrange faux leaves and flowers beneath your paper and use white crayon to capture their textures. Then, apply watercolor washes over the surface, using a resist technique to reveal the impressions beneath.

The remainder of the afternoon will be open art making, with snacks and drinks included. The specialty cocktail will be an apple cider spritz, with a nonalcoholic version also available.

American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation may be provided during this event upon advance request. Please send us an email for more information.
