u.c. to u.r. printed on paper label: Waj-in-ga-ba Ponca.
u.l. to u.r. printed on paper label: Wa-zhin-ga pa, commonly translated \ Bird Head (as if Wazhinga, bird [underlined] and pa head) \ Samuel Fremont said, in 1888, that it \ referred to "a bird that has a white bill, \ with red feathers on the head and neck, \ not the woodcock". Chief of the Wa-sha-be, \ a buffalo gens. This photograph was taken \ about 1882 when the Ponka and Omaha delegates \ met the Dakota (under White Thunder) and Sec. \ Kirkwood to arrange about the Ponka reservation. \ Standing Bear evidently considered himself \ the superior of Wazhinga pa, for when the delegation \ was walking to the Photographic gallery, Standing\ Bear would not carry the satchel containing his \ Indian attire, but made Wazhinga pa act as his body \ servant and trudge behind him with the satchel.
