Photographer and performance artist Martine Gutierrez examines issues of identity, specifically focusing on the social construction of race, beauty, and gender. A trans woman of White American, Guatemalan, and Maya descent, Gutierrez is best known for appropriating the visual language of fashion and advertising in striking self-portraits. Gutierrez earned her BFA in printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2012. In 2019, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth held a solo exhibition of her work titled FOCUS: Martine Gutierrez.
