Helen Frankenthaler 1928-2011

The sad news of the passing of artist Helen Frankenthaler has prompted the estate of noted photographer Ernst Haas to post a wonderful group of photographs showing Frankenthaler at work in her studio in 1969. The Amon Carter acquired works by both Frankenthaler and Haas within months of each other in 2007-2008.

Photographer Jerome Liebling (1924-2011)

Documentary photographer Jerome Liebling has passed away at age 87. Liebling is represented in the Amon Carter's collection by Butterfly Boy, a 1949 portrait of a young boy on a city street, which has been exhibited numerous times since it was acquired by the museum in the 1980s. Analog to Digital: The North American Indian

Thanks to our IMLS-funded digitization grant, all 700+ plates from the full set of Edward Curtis The North American Indian portfolios acquired by the Amon Carter in 2009 are now available on our online collection search. These plates, created between 1907 and 1930, represent Curtis' life work of traveling and documenting Native American traditions in the early 20th century.

Analog to Digital: Interstate Abstraction

One of the great things about working on digitization projects is that you finally get to see so many works that you’d only heard of before. I’ve seen files and database records for nearly every work in the Amon Carter’s collection, but generally only see the images themselves once they are digitized. So until recently, I knew the following three works by title only. Expecting to see a straightforward cityscape, what a happy surprise to see how they actually look.

The following three works – shown here courtesy of our IMLS digitization grant - are by photographer Diane Hopkins-Hughs, who spent several years in Texas and taught at SMU in Dallas. For any readers outside the DFW area, I-30 is the interstate highway that links Fort Worth and Dallas with points to the east and serves as the main connection between the two cities.

Eliot Porter and Earth Day

Thanks to art blogger extraordinaire Tyler Green for featuring photographs from the Amon Carter's massive Eliot Porter archive in special Earth Day posts on his 3rd of May and Modern Art Notes blogs! These photographs are the perfect choice for Earth Day: Eliot Porter shot tens of thousands of ecologically-oriented landscape and bird photographs during his sixty-year career.

And to celebrate, here is an Eliot Porter photograph that he happened to take on this day in 1970, the very first Earth Day.

Celebrating 50 with a New Look

If you've visited or driven by the museum in the past week, you might have noticed a flurry of activity on both the Lancaster and Camp Bowie sides of the building. We officially changed our name to 'Amon Carter Museum of American Art' a few months back, and now the building's unique bronze signs have also been updated with our new name in celebration of our 50th Anniversary.

Here is a shot of the handsome new signage being installed late last week.

Analog to Digital: Hearts and Hands

For our continuing Analog to Digital series, a completely unique photograph to celebrate Valentine's Day. Cataloged under our IMLS-funded digitization initiative, this is actually a black-and-white photograph tinted with watercolors. And those little hearts? Foil stickers that you tend to see at this time of year.

Analog to Digital: Motor Trip to Mesa Verde

For our second installment of Analog to Digital, a new blog series documenting photographs from the Amon Carter's IMLS-funded digitization initiative, we have some very early road trip photos dating back to 1914. These images come from a tourist's photo album called Motor Trip to Mesa Verde and show not only the recently-created national park, but also the perils of driving on unpaved roads.

Milton Rogovin (1909-2011)

American photographer Milton Rogovin passed away yesterday at the age of 101. An optometrist whose business was ruined by his involvement with the Communist party, Rogovin is known for photographing the working poor in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. [NY Times obituary, and an NPR interview with Rogovin]

The following photographs comprise one of the Rogovin triptychs in the Amon Carter's photography collection and document the life of a Buffalo steelworker over several years.
