Event Description

Prominent Texas artists, Letitia and Sedrick Huckaby, will join Carter curators on Zoom for an insightful conversation about how the artists' personal journeys are reflected in their work, the ways they cultivate creativity during the pandemic, and what they're currently working on.

Letitia Huckaby shifted from photojournalist to impassioned contemporary artist interested in personal expression, history, and culture. She turned the camera on herself and family to explore the relationships of faith, family, and legacy, resulting in personal expression of her own family history and African-American heritage. Letitia pushes the boundaries of photography by using traditional practices in nontraditional ways and creating a new visual language. Letitia’s Shirley Lewis: A Stroke of Beauty (2020) is currently on view at the Carter.

Sedrick Huckaby creates large-scale portraits of family and friends to aggrandize ordinary people by painting them on a monumental scale. His recent work predominantly focuses on the African-American family and its heritage. He savors the challenge of working from a live sitter, enjoying both the dichotomy of the incredible energy when painting directly from another person and also the feeling of sharing a small slice of life together.
