Close Encounters

Access Program

Designed for people of all ages with low or no vision and their guests, participants utilize tactile tools and conversation to connect with artworks in the museum’s collection.

Reservations are required. Registration for this program opens July 1. Call 817.989.5030 or email visitors@cartermuseum.org to reserve your place and receive helpful instructions and parking information.

There is a designated barrier-free entrance near accessible parking for vehicles displaying the appropriate disability permits on Lancaster Avenue (the museum’s south side). If these spaces are full, you may drop off participants at the museum’s Lancaster entrance and park personal vehicles and minibuses in the museum lot located on Camp Bowie.

Tools for this program are generously funded by the Alcon Foundation.

Sharing the Past Through Art

Access Program

Designed for adults with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, participants discuss artists, exhibitions, and themes, and use artworks to connect to past experiences. This program is offered on the second Thursday of every month.

No reservations are required. Call 817.989.5030 or email visitors@cartermuseum.org to receive helpful instructions and parking information.

Itty-Bitty Art: Music

Infant Program

Bring your baby (up to 11 months) to the Amon Carter for an art-filled experience! Engage with Jennifer DeSantis, assistant director of the TCU Music Preparatory Division and certified Music Together teacher, as she leads a developmentally appropriate session that includes music-making activities inspired by the Amon Carter’s collection.

Musical activities include singing, instrument play, creative movement, and dancing. Caregivers will learn to recognize early music behaviors such as singing and moving, as well as how to utilize music during daily rituals at home.

Please bring a small blanket for your baby and be sure to wear comfortable clothing.

Sensory Saturdays

Family Access Program

This is a free program for families with children who are 5 to 12 years old and on the autism spectrum. Families will have time to explore artworks in the galleries and get creative during a hands-on, art-making experience!

While the needs of individuals with autism are the focus of this program, it is also intended to be fun for parents, siblings (of all ages), and other relatives!

Outdoor Performance

Spend the evening outdoors, and enjoy music that inspired artist Norman Lewis. Listen to local jazz group Faces The Band play live on the museum’s porch, and explore the special exhibition Procession: The Art of Norman Lewis.

Itty-Bitty Art: Yoga

Infant Program

Bring your baby (up to 11 months) to the Amon Carter for an art-filled experience! Engage with Miranda Davis, owner of PerfectFit Yoga, Pilates, and Wellness, as she leads an age-appropriate yoga session inspired by the Amon Carter’s collection.

Using artwork as inspiration, you will create a unique, playful, intimate, and joyful yoga practice. Enjoy deep breathing, simplistic yoga movement and postures, and plenty of time to relax and bond with your baby.

Please wear comfortable clothing and a baby carrier (front carrying) if you have it. Yoga mats and blocks will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.

The Invention of Wings

Book Club

Prior to the program, read Sue Monk Kidd’s The Invention of Wings (2014). During the program, readers and museum educators gather in the galleries and discuss its connection with the exhibition Identity. Refreshments will be provided after the discussion.

Itty-Bitty Art: Movement

Infant Program

Bring your baby (up to 11 months) to the Amon Carter for an art-filled experience! Engage with Taleisha Jones, instructor at The Little Gym with a background in psychology and child development, as she leads an age-appropriate session that includes movement activities inspired by the Amon Carter’s collection.

This program’s curriculum is designed to help build the skills needed as children become mobile. It will focus on skills to promote inner ear development and strengthen your child’s core to help with balance and stabilization. While your child discovers new movements, colors, and sounds with fascination and joy, you’ll discover new smile muscles you never knew you had!

Children should be dressed in comfortable clothing (dresses are not ideal) for this program. Also, please bring a burp cloth.
