Event Description

Sustainer, Patron, and Circle members are invited to join Executive Director Andrew J. Walker in a discussion with author, historian of visual culture of the American West, and former Carter curator Martha Sandweiss.

Sandweiss will discuss her newest book, The Girl in the Middle: A Recovered History of the American West. Drawing from an 1868 photograph of a young Indigenous woman surrounded by White men, she unravels the girl’s identity and sheds light on the value of photographs in America’s historical narrative. A book signing will follow the talk, and The Girl in the Middle will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop. Space is limited.

Martha Sandweiss is an award-winning author and editor of numerous books on photography and the history of the American West. She is Professor of History Emerita at Princeton University and founding director of The Princeton & Slavery Project.
