Ranches | Three Circles, Tex. page 1 | 2 The Three Circles brand was first used in the late 1860s by J. G. Halsell, in Wise and Clay Counties, and reached its greatest prominence in 1881. By the time Smith was photographing in 1906, the ranch had spread into Knox and Foard Counties, where it ran Hereford cattle. Smith's cousin, Edwin Sanders, also had his ED Ranch in Foard County. Since Sanders appears in many of the Smith's images, posing under Smith's direction, it is likely that the two ranches abutted the Three Circles ranch.
