The Espuela (Spur) Cattle Company, a Texas corporation headed by Alfred M. Britton and S. W. Lomax, was formed in 1883 to establish a ranch in the area east of the southern high plains. After acquiring additional acreage, in 1884 the ranch was incorporated as the Espuela Land and Cattle Company of Fort Worth. British financiers bought the land and cattle in 1885 and, in 1906, sold the property for $5 an acre to the Swensons of the SMS Ranches. Next, they sold the livestock. The last cattle wearing the Spur brand were moved from the ranch in 1915.
