In June 1908, while attending art school in Boston, Massachusetts, Erwin Smith attended Pawnee Bill's Historic Wild West and Great Far East Wonderland that was playing at Boston's Revere Beach. The photographer made portraits of the performers, posing them in front of one of the show's painted backdrops. In addition to depicting Pawnee Bill (Major Gordon W. Lillie) on horseback, Smith also made individual portraits and recorded the names of many of the Native American performers, including George Spotted Elk, Pete Iron Shell, Henry Iron Shell, George Low Cedar, and Jake Fighting Bear. |
