Valton Tyler: Invented Worlds

Members preview reception

This exhibition explores the work of a relatively unknown artist whose desire to push the boundaries of his imagination reflect in the unique, futuristic worlds he created in both his prints and paintings. The show highlights a series of 48 prints from the permanent collection that Tyler created at SMU in 1970. Featuring architectural environments of surreal, organic, and mechanistic forms, these etchings depict otherworldly places often set within proscenium stages. Also included in the exhibition will be 4 to 5 large paintings in which Tyler translates his unique forms into arbitrary, saturated hues that enliven theatrical landscapes. Please RSVP to kathleen.butz@cartermuseum.org or 817.989.5060.

Marfa, Texas
April 25–April 28, 2017

The name itself evokes images that seem far away from the modern world, a laid-back place to get away from the busy life, a place with none of the things that complicate life. There is an endless expanse of blue sky, stunning views into the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico and the Chinati mountains of Texas, and the remarkable stucco and white washed architecture of the town. Marfa is also the home of the internationally known contemporary art museum founded by minimalist artist Donald Judd, the Chinati Foundation. If you want to experience this extraordinary place, join us for a four day, three night trip that includes a visit to Fort Davis, star party at McDonald Observatory, Marfa Prada, art galleries and studios, sophisticated restaurants, and the mysterious Marfa Lights.
