Like Father, Like Son: Edward and Brett Weston

February 21–August 23, 2015
Second floor

Edward Weston (1886–1958) and his son Brett (1911–1993) were both master photographers. Yet rarely is their work shown together. Edward gained initial acclaim through his softly focused pictures, but as his career progressed, he began to admire the camera’s ability to render perfect detail, from close-up still-lifes to sweeping landscapes. Like his father, Brett appreciated how photographs could record the world and at the same time transform it into a symphony of form, light, and texture. But if Edward remained committed to describing the world’s details, Brett found his artistic message in abstraction. This exhibition highlights that divergence. Featuring 23 prints, it offers an unusual opportunity to compare the visions of these two artists and to see how each balanced recording the world’s direct appearance with a sense of abstraction.
