The Carter’s American Labor Prints Collection offers a unique glimpse into the imagery of working life from the 1920s through the 1940s. Acquired from a private collection in 1998, the 113 prints in this group portray workers, mostly men, from a range of professions, including mining, industrial construction, meat processing, and metalworking. Many of these works were created in the workshops of the Graphic Arts Division, a federally funded program that provided studio space, materials, and training for printmakers during the Great Depression. Notable artists include Reginald Marsh, Harry Sternberg, and Harry Gottlieb. Lithographs comprise the bulk of the collection, but strong examples of etchings, screen prints, and linocuts are present as well, along with several drawings and watercolors.
