The Carter houses premier examples of American painting from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Masterworks by Frederic Church, Martin Johnson Heade, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, and William Merritt Chase share gallery space with monumental works by such artists as Stuart Davis, Charles Demuth, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and Georgia O’Keeffe.
