This planographic print first appeared as one of the plates in the portfolio Drawings by Frederic Remington, published by the New York firm R. H. Russell in 1897. The fulsome forward to the publication was authored by the artist’s friend Owen Wister, who would go on to publish his famous western novel The Virginian a few years later. A separate proof print of this subject, signed by Remington, was included in the deluxe edition of the Drawings book, which was bound in suede calfskin and also signed, then offered in a box with the signed proof for a retail price of $10.
